Pte. Thomas Daniel Joseph Hornsby
Australian Army 2/6th Btn.
from:Ballarat, Victoria
Thomas Hornsbey served with the 2/6th Battalion, Australian Army in WW2. He was captured in Greece as he was unable to swim out to the boats that were ferrying the men out to the ships anchored off shore when the British surrendered to the Germans.
He hid in olive groves with others who were left behind and the local population fed them. When the Germans announced that they would shoot anyone who helped them, they gave themselves up. They were marched to a pass near the border and then entrained into Germany/Austria where he was imprisoned in Stalag 18A.
Over the years as a POW he worked in timber mills, reinforced river bank walls and on a farm up higher in the mountains. He was captured around the date of his birthday 12th of May 1941 and freed around the same time four years later.
