Marn. Leslie "Ginge" Jones
Royal Marines HMS Manchester
from:Castle Eden Co Durham
My father was Royal Marine Leslie Jones, originally from Co.Durham. He joined the Marines in early 1939 at the age of 17 and was posted to HMS Manchester in July 1940.
During Operation Substance my father was badly injured on July 23rd 1941 when the Manchester was damaged by a torpedo from an SM.79 torpedo plane of the Italian Air Force. He was returned to Gibraltar for initial treatment, before receiving further treatment back in the UK.
Eventually he returned to active duty serving on HMS Despatch in the Far East and he later trained as a Commando.
When he left the Marines in 1951, after 12 years of service, he was an instructor at the RM Commando School in Bickleigh.
