Pte. Robert Hughes

British Army 2/7th Btn. Duke of Wellingtons (West Riding) Regiment

from:75 Nicholson Road, Sheffield

(d.10th June 1940 )

Robert Hughes was was my brother. He was one of best. I think that he was one of the first to get killed, on the 10th of June 1940. He was buried at Soter Sur Mure then reburied at St Marie Cemetery in Le Havre.

Additional Information:

He was a painter and decorator with his father.

The correct name of the place where Pte. Hughes was temporarily buried in 1940 is Sotteville sur mer, where I have lived since 1989. We are at present working on the possibility of creating a suitable memorial in the village to commemorate the sacrifice of the men of the 2/7th.

We have been to soter sur mure church a few times, to find out where he was first buried. We would like to find out more as to what happened if possible how he was killed and just before and after if possible. And we would like to find out where he was first buried in the village.

Body found on 14th of June 1940 in the plain between Sotteville-sur-mer and Veules les Roses following the fighting of June 11 and 12, 1940. Drawn up on May 3, 1941 on the declaration of VALLET, Charles, municipal councilor, and CHAVENTRE, Albert which proceeded to the identification of the deceased and his burial.
