Gnr. Leonard Douglas Young
British Army 68th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery
from:Stithians, Cornwall
(d.14th Nov 1942)
I'½m afraid I don't know much about my dads Uncle Leonard Young. I am currently trying to find out how he died.
Additional Information:
14/11/1942 is significant as it suggests he was on the SS Scillin which was an Italian troop carrier but was carrying 814 POWs on this date when it was torpedoes by the British HMS Sahib submarine.
It was on its way from Tripoli to mainland Italy. However the captain of the Sahib believed it was heading to a port in Tunisia and was therefore a legitimate target. It was claimed that Sahib crew only realised they were POWson board when the heated the only few British survivors speaking English.
The Scillins position was given by British Command on Malta who had intercepted signals using something referred to as ULTRA.
The POWs were mainly captured 21/06/1942 at Tobruk when it was surrounded to Rommels Axis forces. My uncle was also in the 68th and on the ship at the time and did not survive.
