251327 Gdmn. Richard John Clempson British Army 3rd Battallion Coldstream Guards from:Abergavenny (d.16th March 1943) On enlistment on the 6rh of July 1940, John Clempson was recommended by the Lt. Col. of the Newport Recruiting Centre as being "A smart respectable youth of good character. Quite a good type of youth and recommended as very suitable." John was eventually posted to Egypt and served in Southern Tunisia as part of the BEF. He was sent out in the night of 16/17th March 1943 to advance on Rommel's army, but in crossing a minefield, was blown to bits. A telegramme was sent to his parents, stating he was missing presumed dead. He is commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial in Tunisia. Also in the Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes and on the Abergavenny WW2 War Memorial at the entrance to the market. His mother kept his photograph on the mantelpiece all her life and put another poppy round the frame each year in remembrance.
