251176 Gnr. George Warttig British Army Royal Artillery from:Barnsley, South Yorkshire My father, George Warttig was born in 1923. He joined the Home Guard and the Army at age 17. He was sent to North Africa at age 18 and then to Italy. He was a gunner on a 5.5 gun. He fought at Monte Casino with the Ghurkas whom he admired. My father said how brave all the soldiers of all the different nationalities were. He said the Canadians were the best soldiers. My father went on to Rome after Casino. His cousin was killed at Anzio.
