Pte. Douglas "Tug" Wilson

British Army 44th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment

from:Richmond, Yorkshire

Doug Wilson was only 18 when he was a driver in the Royal Tank Regiment. He was involved in the crossing of the Rhine in Germany, staying in Xander the night before crossing the Rhine and later proceeding on to Wesel. His tank was on a swimming Sherman vessel with canvas sides to hide the tank as they crossed the river. They were bombarded with heavy fire and one vessel sunk with loss of life and wounded men. These were picked up by Doug's tank and they spent the tense night stranded in a vessel on the river. They were later rescued and taken ashore by comrades. Doug saw his best friend blown up in the battle and on reaching land saw his makeshift grave.
