Herbert Frank Field
Auxiliary Fire Service
from:Southampton
My father, BertField was in the AFS in Southampton during WW2. I believe he was based at St Mary's, but there is also a connection with an ambulance unit at Southampton University in University road. This would be logical since we lived in Burgess Road. I remember him talking about the Butter Warehouse at the Docks being hit, which fire lasted several days, after which he had to go to Plymouth because their fire station had been bombed.I believe he might have been a driver. I have a photo of him in uniform and also one of the ambulance unit, which I will find and post later. I believe a member of the same crew might have been a Fred Foot, who later became a Southampton councillor, I think.
Mum & Dad had an ironmongery business, which was in Burgess Road, in the general area of the Flower roads. Dad passed away in Dec 1975. I would be pleased to hear from anybody with more information.
