Cpl. Richard Thomas Williams
British Army Royal Welch Fusilers
from:Alexander Terrace, Caernarfon, Gwynedd
My father, Richard Williams, had been a regular soldier in the Royal Welch Fusilers throughout the 1930's, serving as a bandsman in such places as Gibraltar and China.
Dick left the Army in 1939, but was soon back in uniform at the outbreak of WW2. He was posted to France with the BEF and eventually involved in the rear-guard action during the evacuation from Dunkirk. He and his unit stayed in France for a quite some time after the main withdrawal, but were eventually taken off by ship, from Cherbourg I believe.
There was no official recognition for these servicemen who stayed behind to enable the main Dunkirk evacuation, but my father did receive a medal from the French to commemorate the Battle of the Somme 1940.
Perhaps it is about time the sacrifice made by the thousands of soldiers from this forgotten army was officially recognised.
