Tpr. George Edwin Hill

British Army 56th Recce Regiment

from:143 Harrington Street, Leicester.

George was captured by the enemy in North Africa, only a couple of months after joining the Army. He was kept in several prisoner of war camps, in Germany and the Czech republic from the 28th February 1943. George was released by Russian solders in May 1945.

He said it was very hard, but, was treated relatively well compared to the majority of others. When they were captured in North Africa, they were transported in the hull of a ship, which was icy cold. They were wearing shorts at the time.

In the P.O.W camps they had hidden a radio, so they were a little aware of what was going on on the outside.

George is at the back.

Georges dogtag.
