Cpl. John Clifford Hughes
British Army Sherwood Rangers
from:Stone, Staffs
My Dad, John Hughes always said that he survived due to the speed of his Sherman in reverse when they saw a tiger. My dad served with the Notts and Derbyshire Yeomanry, the Sherwood Rangers in 13 Corps RTR.
I clearly recall, him saying that he much preferred to be in the Royal Armoured Corps as they did not clean and polish their tanks as the Guards regiments did. Therefore, not making them so much of a target.
Easily my biggest regret in life was not talking more to my Dad.
I have been reading 2 books on the Sherwood Rangers. Hard fighting and Tank action.
Dad was a Sherman Driver as well as some other tanks. He was involved with the swimming Tanks and the snorkel system. I just wish I could find more info about his service history etc.
He did speak highly of the commander Sir Brian Horrocks. 400km north of here is a place called Horrocks in the lower Flinders Ranges. I just wonder if it was named after him.
