Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 463 Squadron
David Johnstone trained in the United States in 1941 at the No. 1 British Training School Flying in Terrell, Texas. He was in Course 2 and was at the school on 7th of December 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked drawing the United States into World War II. Before that date the RAF cadets wore their RAF issued gray suits when in town due to the United States official neutrality. On 8th of December the RAF cadets proudly marched into town wearing their blue RAF uniforms. Upon graduation he was commissioned as Pilot Officer D. J. Johnstone.
Upon his return to England he would be promoted to Flying Officer on probation (war substantive) 8th of Dec. 1942 and to Flight Lieutenant (war substantive) 8th of June 1944. He was awarded the DFC on 16th of Jan 1945.
