Cpl. Ronald Hope
Royal Marines
from:Leigh-on-Sea
I only recall one story from my Grandad as I was young when he was alive. He told the story of being stranded at sea off the African coast during WW2 on a small boat with 5 other Marines. They had lost all hope of being found and one Marine shot himself in the head right in front of him. The remaining Marines did eventually reach safety.
He was also in a famous picture which was used in various historic military books about the Marines during WW2. Royal Marines hold spare ammunition for the 4 inch twin mounted anti-aircraft gun as they stand by on this anti-aircraft ship. Ron Hope is 2nd from left.
