Brenda Joan Trivett

Womens Land Army

from:Bristol

My mum, Brenda Trivett, was a member of the Women's Land Army during WW2 and was based at Fieldgrove Farm, Bitton, near Bristol. Her family lived in Bristol and although she was in a protected job working for a food company she decided that she wanted to do her bit for the war and joined the Land Army.

Mum trained, and later became a trainer herself, at Field Grove Farm and had many happy memories of her time there which she shared with me before she died in 1996. We also visited the farm on a couple of occasions so I really do remember her memories well.

Mum made a very close friend of one of the land girls and she later became my godmother. Auntie Nora, as I knew her, is also on several of the photographs but has sadly now also passed away. I have a number of large photographs, that were taken, of the land girls, in and around the farm and later displayed in the bus depot in the centre of Bristol to encourage young women to join up. One particular photograph, shows the land girls leading live bulls around the City Centre, apparently they walked from Durham Down to the Centre, with a police presence and crowds of onlookers. Unfortunately I do not have any documents confirming my Mum's service but I do have my godmother's official note from Elizabeth R confirming her service from April 1940 to November 1950. Also another document in appreciation of ten years good service from the Chief Administrative Officer.
