Pte. John Eric Badcock
British Army 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment
from:Abingdon, Berks.
Jack Badcock was living in Abingdon and enlisted in 1939 as a Private in the 1st Line Territorial Army unit, the 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. The Battalion was called up for active service and carried out training on Salisbury Plain.
Following this the Battalion was sent to France and Belgium with the BEF. At the retreat from Dunkirk Pte. Badcock was in the rearguard action near the canal, where the 4th Battalion took heavy losses. Jack was shot and wounded and received medical care in Brussels before ending his war in a Polish P.O.W.camp Nr Marianeburg. His dog tag reads Stalag V1/A 36870. He returned home after the war to marry my mum. He died in 1981 and is buried in Abingdon.
