Pte. Herbert Dixon
British Army East Yorkshire Regiment
from:Beverley
Sadly my grandad, Herbert Dixon is no longer with us, and sadly he very rarely talked about his life in the war. My Dad and my Uncle have wanted to know more about his life in the War, but we have never been able to piece it all together.
When I was younger I asked him about his life in the war... and sadly he replied "Joanne, all you need to know is I went into a battle with 50 men and me and my mate made it out... " he obviously even after all those years found it very difficult to talk about.
My Dad and Uncle are not getting any younger and I would love to give them a gift of information relating to my Grandad.
I have his Army Book 64 (Soldier's Service and Pay Book)
He enlisted with the Green Howards on 10th March 1933 to 3rd May 1938
and relisted with the East Yorkshire Regiment on 19th of April 1940
he was discharged on 4th of August 1944
from the Queens Royal Regiment. He served in the Middle East 31st of May 1941 to 28th of August 1943,
with the B.N.A.F 29th of August 1943 to 12th of April 1944
and was awarded The Africa Star, The 1939-1945 Star and The Italy Star.
I also have another ribbon (left to right - red strip, navy strip, smaller white strip, thin red strip, small white strip, navy strip and then red strip) with a missing medal as my Grandad gave it to my cousin.
I also have a newspaper clipping, that says "Green Howard, Ripon 1939" showing a picture of him with his regiment marching across a bridge. He posted in the paper asking to get in touch with his comrades ? not sure if anyone did. He says he was based at the Green Howards Drill Hall at Albert Terrace in Beverley.
