Pte. James Thomas
British Army 23rd (Welsh Pioneers) Btn. Welsh Regiment

James Thomas was born on 21st January 1877. His father, Thomas, was 23 and his mother, Hannah, was 22. In 1881 he lived with his parents at Llwyndderi Row, Old Conwil Road. By 1891, the census shows that he lived with his parents at Parkcwm. The 1901 and the 1911 censuses also show him living at Parkcwm with his parents and was a Mason Worker. Prior to the War James had worked in Llanelli as a monumental mason as well as general masonry.
James enlisted in the Welsh Pioneers on 17th of November 1916 when he was 39 years old. He contracted malaria during his time in WWI. He ended up committing suicide at Parkcwm in the dairy as a result of the side-effects of the condition and his experiences in the war. The coroners account, reads like he was suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. James Thomas of Parkcwm, Newchurch Carmarthenshire died on 24th of June 1919, when he was 42 years old.
