Robert Josiah Herrington

Bevin Boy Ashington Colliery

from:Stoke-Newington, London

My Dad, Bob Herrington, served as a Bevin Boy and lived at the Ashington Miners Hostel. He met and married Margaret Carruthers, known as Peggy, a local girl who used to deliver the laundry to the hostel.

They moved to London after the war. Bob had a lifelong fear of enclosed spaces caused by his time in the mines. Sadly he died in 2006 before the contribution of the Bevin Boys was properly recognised.
