Audrey Elaine Winter
Auxiliary Fire Service 40 RHQ Bristol
from:Toklai, Assam
Before the War, my parents lived at the HQ of the Indian Tea Association in Toklai, Assam. In 1941 my father joined the Indian Army (Mahratta Light Infantry) and was posted to the Western Desert, and later took part in the Italian campaign.
My mother came home to Bristol, her home city, for the duration of the War. There she joined 40 RHQ Auxiliary Fire Service, Bristol, and served until the end of the War, when both my parents returned to India.
I recently helped my mother (now aged 100) to publish her memoires, "Plucking the Moon from the Bottom of the Sea - the Life and Times of Audrey Winter" which include details of her service during the War with the Auxiliary Fire Service.
