Pte. George Boone
British Army 2nd Btn. Royal Irish Fusiliers
from:Draperstown, Northern Ireland
George Boone was my Father. He joined the 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1936 at St Lucia Barracks, Omagh, Co Tyrone. He saw pre-war service in Malta and Palestine and subsequent WW2 service in Malta, North Africa and Italy where he survived the Battle of Leros Island. Unfortunately the Island and many fine soldiers were lost in this battle and my Father, along with other survivors was taken prisoner. My Father and other POW's were eventually transported to Stag IVB in Mulhberg, Germany where he remained incarcerated from 16th of November 1943 to 16th of May 1945. This journey took fourteen long days by train, with POW's crammed into cattle wagons.
Brave men, to whom we all owe the freedoms we enjoy today!
