Sgt. Ernest Arthur Withers

Royal Air Force

from:Nottingham

Ernest Withers, my father, served as an Armourer on Liberators and Lancasters from 1943 to 1946. The story is unusual because his father, Arthur William Withers served as a Flight Sergeant on the same base. My Mother Kathleen Olive Withers served as a Nursing Auxilliary at the local Hospital in Kirkham.

My Grandfather served in both wars firstly in the Fleet Arm Arm from 1914 until it became part of the RAF in 1918. He then volunteered for the RAF Auxilliary after the First War and of course was called up immediately in 1939 at the outbreak of war, two years before my father was called up in 1940.
