Mne. Albert Henderson Bowman
Royal Marines
from:Aberdeen
My father, Albert Bowman, never spoke about his experiences during the war, apart from describing his time in India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) at the end of the war.
He was 34 when war broke out and was not required to enlist, but he volunteered first for the navy and then for other services. They all rejected him, but the Royal Marines (of all people!) took him on and he served with pride. Every time he heard the "Royal Marines March", he would stand to attention and even salute if appropriate.
Unfortunately my dad died at 64 when I was just 22 and not yet curious enough to question him about his wartime experiences, but after his death an aunt told me that he had been at Dunkirk. She did qualify this by saying "second landing". I do not know what she meant by this and have been unable to find further information.
