Able Sea. John Richmond Heron

Royal Navy HMS Lanka

from:Hartlepool

My father John Heron served in WW2 on a number of ships, and was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean. His legs were badly burned and scarred for the rest of his life, but he was obviously rescued. He never spoke about his Naval service, except to say he had been on convoy duty as a gunner and occasional amusing incidents, such as watching the coolies loading a ship in Bombay, when they all fell off the gangplank because one of them got out of step with the rest.
