from:Swarland
Fred Moffat joined up with his cousin in Alnwick. They joined the Northumberland Fusiliers but Fred soon was transferred to the Gordon Highlanders and became part of the BEF in Belgium. They retreated to Dunkirk and Fred never forgot the smell of dead horses along the way. He was one of the last men off the beaches and was wounded. Along with other injuries he had a perforated ear drum and was hospitalised back in England.
The Battalion became part of the Royal Artillery and Fred spent the rest of the war training Borstal boys and the Home Guard in Nottinghamshire.
