I enlisted in 1944 trained at Ipperwash and Chatham. I sailed to England Dec.16 1944 and trained at Aldershot. I was shipped to Ghent, Belgium and assigned to the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, 4th Division. We fought along the Dutch German border.
When the war ended I was dug in on the front lawn of Elmer Precht. He had two sons both prisoners of war held at Barrie, Ont. I was transferred to the HLI of C and served in the Occupational force, returned to Canada received my discharge in July 1946.
We sailed to England on the Mauretania and home on the Aquatania. The biggest ships I had ever seen. We were on the banks of the Rhine when it ended near Oldenburg
I married a lovely Irish girl who came to Canada in 1950. We raised three boys. I have 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. My wife of 63 years died Sept 6 2016, our youngest son died in Nov.
I have been retired over 31 years and am now alone. I will be 92 in Dec.
To my knowledge one member of my platoon is still alive, but for how long?
