My Father Lemmie Griifths was with the B.E.F. and was captured at Dunkirk. I understand that he and some others escaped, possibly on route to Stalag XXb. They stopped at a French farm house inquiring of any food and were promptly ratted on by the farmer's wife. He was ordered to work in the fields, harvesting potatoes amongst other foodstuffs for the duration of the war.
Upon return in a Lancaster bomber to Cardiff, he hired an American jeep for the day and rode into the valleys in style, children chasing after, etc, to see family for first time in 6 years. Late, I learned that for years on he'd have to sit once per week whilst my mother prized the potato eyes that were still growing out of his back having been put in a hole to peel them.
Naturally, he spoke very little more of his experiences.
I wonder if anyone can recall the great escape and how long it lasted.
