L/Cpl. Cecil John Davie

British Army Royal Elecrical and Mechanical Engineers

from:Budleigh Salterton, Devon

Like many, Cecil Davie would not talk about his war time experiences. He was missing a finger, he always told us children that it had been sucked up in a vacuum cleaner. My fondest memory is of him sitting in his armchair watching 'The Great Escape'. A big smile crossed his face as Steve McQueen attempted his escape on a motor bike.

I know that he had trouble adjusting to civilian life after the war and had to spend time in Netley Military Hospital. In the family we have a cushion cover that he created as part of his therapy.
