Sgt. Alfred Driver DFM.

Royal Air Force 10 Squadron

from:Merthyr Tydfil

My grandfather, Alf Driver, served in WWII and won the DFM. We don't have the transcript but I was told by an aunt that he rebuilt a radio under fire that had been damaged. He was a wireless operator 1st class and air gunner.

I have a photo of his DFM and him receiving an award from the local Rotary Club in uniform for his DFM. After the war he was a Flt Lt. in the ATC and taught kids about the RAF which he loved. He died in 1973.

One story about him was that his wife lived under the flightpath to their base in Yorkshire and, when they got back safely from a raid, he would have the pilot fly low over the house and rev an engine so she knew he was back safe.

Another story was that he got in trouble with an officer once on an inspection of the aircraft crew prior to a pamphlet raid on North Germany (I think Wilhelmshaven). The story I was told was that when he stood to attention he kept his arms folded. When told to stand to attention properly two half bricks fell out of his flying jacket onto the floor in front of him. He got a reprimand for "unauthorised weight" and was asked why he was carrying two half bricks. He told them "he'd like to drop something a bit more lethal than paper, with a bit of luck it might hit one of the b****rs".
