Sgt. Joseph Herbert Warren

British Army

from:Frittenden, Cranbrook

My father Joseph Warren served throughout the second world war in Maidstone. He had served in India for 6 years in the 1920/30's. He was a proud member of the regimental band, playing bugle and drums. For the rest of his days he could always manage to get some sort of tune out of any instrument he came across. He spent several years on civvy street, and I think he was called up again when the war started. He did not see active service abroad. I was born in February 1939, so did not really get to know my dad until the war finished in 1945. I remember he used to send me letters which he embellished with drawings. Often of me rushing along on my bike with my pigtails flying out behind. I can remember one Christmas when I was about 5, the regiment gave a party for all the children of servicemen. The thing that stood out in my mind was the amount of food on offer. To a war time child that was truly amazing. It obviously made an impression on me as I remember it to this day! When he was demobbed finally, he set up in business as a self employed decorator and signwriter, which he continued until he retired due to ill health. He died at the age of 61.
