Able Sea. John William Shreeve
Merchant Navy SS Avonwood
(d.14th Dec 1942)
Jack Shreeve served on the SS Avonwood which was in convoy off Lowestoft when it was hit by a torpedo. The SS Ethylene rescued thirteen survivors, six from the Norwegian vessel Marianne, and six from the Avonwood. Jack was one of those rescued.
Unfortunately, he subsequently collapsed and died on board the Ethylene. There is a copy of the statement made by Master of the Ethylene, Lawrence Bruce Anderson, giving details of the circumstances. John William was taken to the Royal Jubilee Infirmary, North Shields where he was certified dead.
He is named on the Merchant Seamen's Memorial in London and buried in Tooting Cemetery. He was 21 years old.
