PFC. Louis William Smith
United States Army
from:New London, Ohio
My father was captured after being shot in the knee at the Battle of the Bulge in the Argonne Forest. They were transported by train to 4B.
He said they were not allowed to eat or drink and packed so tight that no one could sit down. They ate rats and anything they could get to stay alive as food was very short. He and three other men escaped when the Russians liberated the camp and made their way through enemy lines back to the American lines west of their location.
He earned the Bronze Star, POW medal, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart.
He died in 2000.
