Pte. Robert Noel Jones
British Army Royal Irish Fusiliers
from:Dublin
My father, Robert Jones was a POW for 4 years. His unit was captured on one of the Greek Islands and transported by train to the camp. He never really spoke about his time at the camp, he would only say that the food rations were meagre and usually consisted of old bread and some sort of soup. He never spoke badly about the German guards, just saying they were only doing their job, and that most of the guards were soldiers who had been injured and taken out of the fighting.
Upon his release he returned to Ireland, where his mother had to feed him a liquid diet until he was able to eat solid food again. Upon his return to the ranks he came to Bangor, North Wales to dismantle one of the Italian POW camps, whilst there he met and married my mother. He remained in the Army until 1949, after being posted to Palestine in 1947, and lived a good life until he passed away in 2002.
