John Walter Hughes
British Army
from:Bangor, North Wales
John Hughes, a despatch rider, was captured at Dunkirk in May 1940 after being shot in the temple by a sniper while on the road. He survived and was marched along with many other POWs through Belgium and Germany to Stalag 20a in Poland. Here, he stayed until liberated in 1945. He worked on the farm. It seems he didn't get back home to Bangor in North Wales, until 1946, however. When he did, he weighed only 5 stone. He suffered from nightmares for many years. However, he lived a long life, dying at the age of 95 in 2002.
