Pte. Thomas Hughes
British Army Cameron Highlanders
My late father, Thomas Hughes served in the Cameron Highlanders, and then Army Air Corps from 1928-1945 I dont know much about the camp, just the info from the book. The camp was about 12 miles behind enemy lines, apparently the British contacted the German commandant to organise a truce to take British & American pows out, they had no food, and a typhus epidemic was starting, then it became part of the Russian front lines from 4th May 1945. The other pows, Dutch, Belgians and others were then stuck. My father never never spoke of the time behind the wire, so I never got any info, the irony is I am married to a wonderful German man and his story was also traumatic from the other side of course.
