Able Sea. Harry William Woods "Bogey" Knight
Royal Navy HMS Decoy
from:Selsey, Sussex
Harry Knight, our friend, who has only just died aged 97, told harrowing tales of the Arctic convoys. ie, when he was thawed out of his gun position having been frozen in place, of the constant Luftwaffe strafing, and afterwards of the empty places in the mess where his mates had sat earlier.
He also told of being promised by the brass of "just one more trip lads, thats all", and then having been let down and sent yet again. He loved the Service though, and told us that he had some of his best times there. Like many, he was little more than boy, fresh off the farm, when he joined up, and experienced the horror of the Arctic Convoys. I applied for, and received, the Arctic Star for him, a couple of years ago, as he had seemingly been overlooked.
