238086 Mjr. William Shephard British Army 2nd Btn. C Coy Royal Irish Fusiliers from:Armagh City Bill Shephard was a prisoner of war in Oflag 79 following the fall of Leros in the Dodecanese Campaign in November 1943. He had been promoted through the ranks and was the QM of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers when Leros fell. He actually commanded the battalion for a few days reflecting the large number of officers who were killed in action - which included the Commanding Officer - Lt Colonel Maurice French. Major Shephard maintained 200 page diary detailing his time in Oflag 79. The original is held in the Royal Irish Fusilier Museum in Armagh City. He was a native of Armagh City.
