My dad, Brian Lusk was a New Zealand doctor at Stalag 4B. Towards the end of the war he got an infected leg and a friendly German doctor got him penicillin, which cured him. I'm told that when the guards opened the gates to let them free, dad escaped with another prisoner and the German doctor. They got pushbikes and rode through the mountains. Dad told me it was very beautiful. They threaded their way through all the refugees in vehicles, so they were able to travel faster. When they got to the American lines Dad and his prisoner mate walked up to the soldiers with the German doctor between them. "Don't shoot him," said Dad, "he's been kind to the prisoners." I'd like to meet the family of that German doctor to thank him for his care of my dad.
