Matthew Robertson

British Army Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders

from:Pollock, Glasgow

My grandfather, Matthew Robertson, served with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in WW2. He lived in Pollock, Glasgow and his wife's name was Georgina.

He didn't say much about the war, I remember that when an airplane or helicopter went overhead he would cringe. His time in the army affected him for the rest of his life. In Australia we celebrate ANZAC day and remember those who served. He always said I don't need a day to remember my mates that I lost, I remember them every day. Very poignant.

He served in Africa and Italy. He would recount a story that the Ghurkas would sneak up behind the soldiers in the dark and put the sickle up to their neck as a joke. Pretty scary stuff but they all had a laugh seeing as they were on the same side!
