Frank Allan Whittle

National Fire Service No. 36 Fire Force

from:Loughton, Essex

My father, Frank Whittle, served with the National Fire Service in London during WWII. He was stationed at the Spalding Road Fire Station in Streatham and was active in Central London during the Blitz. I've attached a picture of the crew from Spalding Road. My Dad served from 29th of August 1941 until 29th of July 1945. His National Service registration number was BTP8379. He suffered several injuries in the service. He was released at the end of the War with a commendation from the Commander of the Area Headquarters in Gantshill.

I was born on Salford Road in Streatham. After a few close calls my mother and I were billeted out to Oxfordshire for the balance of the war. My mother told me many stories of wartime, listening for the "Buzz Bombs" to run out of fuel and running to the cupboard under the stairs for cover. Apparently, I slept in the bottom drawer of a chest of drawers with the top drawers removed as the plaster would fall from the ceiling when the bombs got close. Prior to my birth my mother worked in a Spitfire factory.

I am very proud of both of my parents and their contributions during the war.
