Pte. Dennis Edward Mitchell
British Army
from:Totton, Hampshire
Dennis Mitchell loved the army life but not everyone did. There was one guy in the battalion who hated it. They were on a training hike one time and this particular man couldn't keep up. He kept stopping and sitting down. They were 10 miles from home when he sat down and refused to get up. The Captain asked Dennis for his rifle, Dennis thought the Captain was going to shoot the man but instead he put the sling over the man's head and under his arms and dragged him the 10 miles home. The man was admitted to hospital and then dishonourably discharged.
Another time Dennis was told he had Guard duty on the following Wednesday. The next day he was reminded that he had a hockey game to play, of which he was one of the best players. Dennis said he was sorry but he couldn't play as he had guard duty. The Captain then said, "Soldier, you know you have to obey the most recent order". So Dennis played hockey. On the Thursday he was called up before the Major and given a week of peeling spuds for failing to obey an order, it was the only time he ever got into any trouble.
