Thomas Joseph Bernard Jarvis
Auxiliary Fire Service
from:Shepherds Bush
My Father served with the AFS. He was Thomas Joseph Bernard Jarvis. He was in what I believe was called a reserved occupation, because the firm he worked for was allied to food production. He was a volunteer. We lived in Shepherds Bush and I would love to trace where he served. I only know he was up in London during the big night of the blitz, when St Paul's seemed to be the only building standing in a sea of flames. I know he was involved when the very first time hand signals were introduced to pass messages from one man to another, and that "tapping the head" meant "come here" and "arching the arm" meant "put on the water, 2 and so on-- that is if my memory is correct. I was only about 3 years old when the war started, so my memory is a bit muddled. He died some years ago, and my interest has risen due to a very interesting talk on the history of the fire service that I heard last night and I am keen to find out more about these volunteers, if this is possible.
