234757 Pte. John Stanness British Army 9th Btn. Durham Light Infantry from:Sunderland My uncle John Stanness was captured at Tobruk and taken to Tripoli then shipped to PG70. I don't know how long he was there. Then he was moved to a camp in Czechoslovakia, 1vc Wistritz Bei Teplitz (Rozenthal-Brux). He spent the rest of the war there until liberated by the American Army. Additional Information: | In the camp in Czechoslovakia he had to work 6 days a week 12 hours a day down a coalmine. The steiger(guard) used to draw a chalk line down the coal face and another 8 or 10 feet further along and told him to hew that much. Uncle soon tired of doing so much he had an idea.He removed the chalk line and drew another chalk line and reduced the distance. He had a great time for a while then went down to hew his section only to find the steiger had whitewashed the whole coal face.hilton stanness
