Pte. Hubert Ralph Walker

British Army

from:Yardley Wood, Birmingham

My father Bert Walker said little about his wartime experiences in Burma. He spoke of incoming shells sounding like a train heading his way, of disposing of leeches with a hot cigarette, and of pranks like shaving off half of the Sergeant Major's moustache whilst he was asleep. He preferred not to talk about the fighting. During the war my mother was in the German Army as a telephonist/searchlight operator (that, and how they met is another story) and I remember them exchanging war stories.
