I think the photo includes my uncle Cyril Evan Maddy. Same regiment same company. I believe he is sitting on the right of William Mogie. He was a Welshman from the small valley town of Tredegar. He left coal mining at aged 17 to join the army in 1938, his father had served in WW1. Although he joined the South Wales Borderers, he ended up in the 5th QORWK D company. Served with them until he was killed in Italy on 30th November 1943, whilst attacking from Mozzagrogna towards a strongly fortified position in the village of Romagnoli. D company led the attack suffering severe casualties. Hewas 23 and is buried in the River Sangro War Cemetery with the other members of D company.
