App. John George Wilson
Merchant Navy MV Hopetarn

George Wilson was an Apprentice serving aboard the M.V. Hopetarn on 29th May 1943 when the vessel was torpedoed by German U Boat U-198. As the vessel sank and the crew manned the lifeboats, George ran back on board to gather radio equipment that was later used to enable their rescue. As a result of his actions, George's name was published in the London Gazette: "By the King's Order the name of John George Wilson was published in the London Gazette on 8th February, 1944, as commended for brave conduct in the Merchant Navy. I am charged to record His Majesty's high appreciation of the service rendered. Signed Winston Churchill, Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury."
