230052 RSM Sidney Sherriff British Army Can anybody give me any information about RSM Sidney Sherriff (my grandfather)? He was "Camp Leader" in Stalag 8b. Additional Information: | There is a memoir “With Head Held High: Jewish Soldiers in Nazi Hands” by Yosef Almogi (Karlenboim) describing the ordeal of Jewish POWs from Mandatory Palestine, in particular in Lamsdorf.
RSM Sherriff is described as a true hero whose influence counteracted efforts by the Nazis to encourage anti-Semitism in the camp. Mr. Almogi went on to be a prominent politician in Israel. As far as I know the memoir has not been translated into English.
There are many moving episodes, but perhaps the most shocking was the encounter between these Jewish POW and civilian Jewish concentration camp prisoners, and the POW’s attempts to assist these people who were marked for death. Again RSM Sherriff played a role and encouraged all the POW in Lamsdorf to help. Sadly these efforts were unsuccessful.
