My family and I lived in the village of Hawley, near Dartford, Kent from 1936 until 1946. During the war it was known as `bomb alley' and `hell's corner', because of the number of bombs that fell on our area when the German bombers travelled back and forth from Dover. In the village we were known as the `colonials' from Canada, because we had arrived from there in 1936. When the war started we were unable to return to our country of birth, although my mother and father had left Dartford in 1914 with two children aged 2 and 5 months. Father was born in South Darenth and mother was born in Dover. There were four brothers and two sisters and we lived at No. 40 Shirehall Road. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can remember our family or anyone who wants to swop war stories.
