I was born in 1929, so was a schoolboy when WWII started. I lived in Sunderland which was a big shipbuilding town and a target for German bombers from 1940. We had dozens of raids and lots of damage, people killed and injured. By 1943 I was in the RAF Cadets and put in nights as a fire watcher on tall buildings, putting out incendiary bombs with sand (because water made the fire worse). I spent two weeks a year on operational RAF stations and had flights in bombers (training, of course!). I left school in 1944 and went into the Regular Army in 1947, spending the next six years in BTA (Austria) and BAOR (Germany) in the Royal Engineers.
