He went to the family at the age of 6 years old. Mrs. Donnelly, Rosina was a sister of Alan's mother Isabella Mooney. Alan worked as a foreman builder and lived in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. His wife's name was Joan.
Alan joined the Army Air Corps and as a paratrooper was dropped into German enemy lines. He was captured, having sustained a broken leg. He was held at Stalag X1-B in Fallingbostel and was POW No. 117367.
