Pte. Kenneth Segard Carlson

United States Army 8th Observation Squadron

from:Hibbing, Minnesota

Kenneth Segard Carlson born on 20th February 20th 1918, was the son of Sigfried Carlson and Amelia Johnson. Sigfried, born in Sweden, he arrived in America in 1902 and lived in Chicago where Ken and his three brothers were born. He later moved to Hibbing, Minnesota, where he had a cobbler's shop on First Avenue making and repairing shoes.

Kenneth Carlson worked as a transit engineer for an iron mining company. He served from March 12th 1941 to October 19th 1945 in United States Army 8th Observation Squadron. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

Life on the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota was often rugged. Ken died at the early age of 46 on December 6th 1964. He left behind a wife and three children, who have missed him and remember him fondly these 51 years. He survived the war but not the rigours of working in mines.
